In a new study, researchers at the University of Minnesota analyzed data from nearly 11,000 patients who had used the prescription drug Nexium to treat their conditions. They found that the drug’s label was not nearly as accurate as a prescription. “The results of this analysis suggest that the drug has not been as effective as a prescription in managing heartburn, and that it may not be as safe as the prescription,” explains, a professor of medical and behavioral science at the University of Minnesota. In addition, some of the drugs were not taken by patients who did not have heartburn. The researchers say this is an important finding because the patients taking the drugs were also taking other medications.
“We have a lot of patients who are using the prescription medication, but the results are not as good as the data showed. If you had taken these drugs and your symptoms improved, your doctor may have been able to prescribe a new drug to treat your condition,” says Dr. Paul D. Schulz, a professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota.
Nexium, also known as Prilosec, is a prescription medication that was originally used to treat acid reflux in heartburn patients. The drug’s label included a “proton-pump inhibitors,” or PPIs, that are used to prevent the acid from reaching the stomach.
The researchers analyzed the prescribing information for the drugs and found that most patients on Nexium had a “proton pump inhibitor” diagnosis. “These drugs were not only used to treat acid reflux but were also taken by patients who did not have heartburn,” explains Schulz. “A large proportion of the patients on Nexium had been using PPIs for over a year.”
Nexium was found to have a positive impact on heartburn, which is one of the most common causes of heartburn. Studies show that the drug’s use has a positive impact on the quality of the heartburn-related hospitalizations. According to theJournal of the American Medical Association, the American Heartburn Association (AHA) recommends a heartburn-specific drug to treat heartburn for as long as a patient has had heartburn for an extended period of time.
A doctor can prescribe Nexium if a patient has had heartburn for over a year. “The most common reason for a prescription is to treat a heartburn-related hospitalization or acute medical condition,” Schulz explains. “The most common reason for a prescription is to treat a chronic condition, such as heartburn. It’s important to note that the patient may not have been prescribed Nexium, but may have had other drugs that were prescribed or taken by a doctor in the past.
“If you are having chronic conditions and you don’t have a doctor who can prescribe Nexium to treat your heartburn, your doctor may have a prescription. This can be done by your doctor or a nurse, but it’s important to tell your doctor right away if you have a heartburn diagnosis or if it gets worse.”
According to Schulz, a patient has to be a patient with chronic heartburn when they have taken the drug for more than one year. “If your patient was diagnosed with chronic heartburn during this time, it might be best to ask them to switch to an other medication that’s less likely to cause heartburn,” he explains.
A doctor can prescribe Nexium if a patient has had heartburn for more than one year. “You might have a heartburn if you take Nexium for more than six months,” Schulz says. “If you’re taking the drug for more than six months, your doctor may suggest switching to a different medication, which might be better than Nexium.”

Nexium (esomeprazole) works by blocking the enzymes that digest acid. Nexium works by decreasing stomach acid production, which in turn helps to alleviate symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn, acid reflux, and ulcers. Nexium also helps relieve bloating and gas, which are common symptoms of heartburn. By blocking the production of stomach acid, Nexium reduces the amount of acid that your stomach produces.

Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea while taking Nexium. It's important to tell your doctor about any other medications you're taking to avoid potential side effects.

While Nexium (esomeprazole) is generally safe for most people, it may not be the best choice for everyone. Before you start taking Nexium, talk with your doctor about other treatment options for your heartburn and indigestion. They may be able to offer you more information or refer you to a specialist.
